Meeting with the Ancestors (1)/ Worms

Worms, Germany, 49°38’03″N 8°21’58″E, 20th February 2011.

The name of one of the oldest German cities? Worms. Pre-Roman, the Celts gave it a name almost as elegant: Borbetomagus.

On the trail of Siegfried, the hero of teutonic myth ‘Das Nibelungenlied’, who is said to have spent time here. The characters in the story are apparently based on historical figures.

The myth was misused for Propaganda in the Third Reich; the rich and timeless set of stories remains tainted. It could be used as a key to better comprehend heritage and collective mindset. Perhaps it is time to reclaim it within an understanding of its full cultural history.
