Zoroastrianism is an ancient religion/ philosophy based on the teachings of Zoroaster (Zarathustra). A kind of forerunner to today’s main religions, it is still practised by a minority in Iran, chiefly in Yazd.
The ‘Towers of Silence’ is where Zoroastrians, their religion disallowing earth or fire burials, used to bring their dead, to be disposed of by vultures.
There are two such towers in Yazd. The bodies used to be laid in the cavity in the middle of the platform. The towers are no longer in use.
